In The Press
Journalists! Are you looking for a press kit?
It’s always a real treat to be covered in the press, and I try to keep track of articles written about ANGELINA or my research. My sincerest thanks to anyone who has covered the work – I really appreciate people spending the time to learn and write about the project! If you notice coverage I’ve not included up here, do get in touch and let me know!
Some of my recent favourites:
I was interviewed by Joe Martin for Custom PC magazine! I can’t put the whole PDF online but they very kindly let me put up the first bit, which you can see here.
Technically not recent, because I totally missed it, but the Artechnik podcast talked about us back in June! It’s really cool, right at the start of the episode. Hear it here.
Lewis Denby wrote about ANGELINA’s latest exploits for Rock, Paper, Shotgun in a lovely feature piece with some very nice things to say about the work. There’s also a lively comments thread to read through there too. Incredibly excited to be featured there.
From most recent to least:
A Puzzling Present was released in late December 2012. We got some amazing coverage. In no particular order:
New Scientist “One Percent” Blog

Benetton linked and said nice things about me here. I think this is the first and only time I will be featured on a website proclaiming “MILANO | PARIS | BARCELONA”.

Terry Cavanaugh [and others!]‘s FreeIndieGam.es linked to us! I had no idea about this because my inbound link detection is worse than awful. But this is really cool. Terry is a really inspirational indie developer, and a key driving force behind the Cambridge Indies group. He also makes superb games.

I was featured on Australian ABC’s ‘Spawn Point’ show, which is really cool. You can see a stream version of it here. Really weird hearing someone read your name out.
Here’s one I missed earlier - The Escapist wrote about us. They said: “But isn’t the idea of humans profiting by sitting on our butts while machines do all our work what generally gets us into trouble with violently rebellious androids in the first place? Tread carefully, Cook, for the sake of us all.” I really love the article. Go take a look!
The so-slick-it-hurts PlayStation Access magazine interviewed me about ANGELINA for their third issue, which you can read online here (I’m on Page 22, next to a stupendous illustration). It’s a pretty cool article. I like how it mentions the responsibility of the wider industry, front and centre.
The delightful team over at CBC’s Spark radio show interviewed me about the whole ANGELINA project. I had to go to a proper recording studio and everything, it was rather exciting and very fun. You can hear the full interview here, as well as an amazing edited version here, with a great little intro segment. I loved it! Thanks a lot to everyone at Spark for that.
The BBC’s ‘frontiers of the Internet’ podcast, Outriders, interviewed me for their show. The show’s host, Jamillah, told me she’s actually studying AI herself right now, and the interview had a really good feel to it. The Outriders team also did the incredible job of making me sound coherent and knowledgeable, which I believe has been shown to be impossible using conventional computers. So well done on that count!
Le Monde’s videogames blog, Playtime, wrote a little about us too. Actually, we were featured on a bunch of non-English blogs and sites, which made me feel very bad indeed in my horrible monoglot ways, so let me thank NeoTeo, IDG, blognone, Crackajack.de and everyone else who featured us. You have my sincere apologies for never having paid enough attention in my language lessons!
Ars Technica blew apart the entire Internet seemingly by featuring us, including some delightful original quotes thanks to Megan Geuss’ intrepid emailing. Thanks to both Megan and Ars for the excellent feature.
Amusement.net gave us a looking over, awarding us a 3/5 for amusement. ANGELINA needs to produce more substantial stuff than a jumping Santa, apparently. Challenge accepted!
Engadget also gave us some of their digital column inches. There’s a great comment about human internment camps too. I showed it to ANGELINA and she laughed, and laughed. And laughed. Hmm.
Kotaku also featured us! Wow. This was pretty cool. Their comments threads are always very lively too, this one is no exception. I wanted to comment too but I think they got eaten by the spam filter.
ExtremeTech have some nice commentary on the project also, especially in terms of the future stuff.
Beefjack (who I newshounded for once upon a time, before ANGELINA encroached on my time too much!) covered ANGELINA too. Computational Creativity even gets a mention!
The Verge also picked up the story, which was an honour in itself! Really succinct description of what ANGELINA does there, too, which is really cool.
The New Scientist piece also led to a feature on “The Singularitarian”, a Tumblr about the technological Singularity. I found this pretty neat, in a morbid kind of way I suppose! Thanks very much for reblogging it, folks!
New Scientist – AI Designs Its Own Videogame - This was so much fun to do. We also made them a game! It’s linked to on the article, go check it out!
